Chemical Ablation (sclerotherapy)
Despite all the advancements in laser technology, sclerotherapy still remains the overwhelming choice of doctors and patients for spider vein treatment. Why? Because it is more effective, and less painful than any other treatment available.
Sclerotherapy is the most commonly performed treatment for varicose and spider veins. By injecting chemical agents, we trigger inflammation in a diseased varicose vein or spider vein causing the vessel to swell and seal. This process leads the vessel to progressively shrink, allowing the vein to become completely absorbed by the body.
Large veins are injected using image guidance through ultrasound. [show a picture] Only by understanding the disease process deep to the skin may successful and safe treatment be accomplished. Small vein and spider veins do not require ultrasound during treatment, yet we will often use transillumination [show image] to permit better visualization of the superficial venous network.
At Lafayette Vein & Laser Center, we use only the FDA-approved chemical sclerosing agents, polidocanol (Asclera) and sodium tetradecyl sulfate (Sotradecol). Treatment is very well tolerated with very low risk, and a few minor side effects. The majority of patients require more than one or two sessions. Literature and our experience have shown better vessel clearance when combined with compression therapy.
